Everything you need to know about African net sponges and our products
African Net Sponge Basics
What is an African net sponge?
An African net sponge (also called a sapo sponge, African exfoliating net, or bath net) is a traditional West African bathing tool made from 100% nylon. It features an open-weave mesh design with small knots that provide effective exfoliation.
Originally used as fishing nets in West Africa, women discovered the material was perfect for deep skin exfoliation. The sponge has been used for generations across Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and other West African countries.
The sponge stretches to approximately 45-50 inches long, allowing you to easily scrub your entire body including hard-to-reach areas like your back.
What are the benefits of using an African net sponge?
The African net sponge offers numerous benefits for your skin:
- Deep exfoliation — Removes dead skin cells more effectively than loofahs
- Treats keratosis pilaris — Helps reduce "chicken skin" bumps
- Prevents ingrown hairs — Regular exfoliation keeps skin clear
- Improves circulation — Scrubbing stimulates blood flow
- More hygienic — Quick-drying nylon resists bacteria
- Long-lasting — One sponge lasts 2-5 years
- Rich lather — Creates foam with minimal soap
How long does an African net sponge last?
With proper care, an African net sponge can last 2-5 years. This is significantly longer than traditional loofahs, which need replacing every 3-4 weeks.
To maximise lifespan: rinse thoroughly after each use, hang to dry in a ventilated area, wash monthly, and replace if you notice persistent odour or significant damage.
What is an African net sponge made of?
Authentic African net sponges are made from 100% nylon. The material is woven into an open mesh pattern with small knots throughout — these knots provide the exfoliating texture.
Nylon is ideal because it's durable, dries quickly to prevent bacteria, creates excellent lather, and is machine washable.
How to Use
How do I use an African net sponge?
Using an African net sponge is simple:
- Wet your skin — Stand under warm water for 2-3 minutes
- Wet the sponge — Thoroughly soak under water
- Add soap — Apply body wash directly onto the sponge
- Scrub your body — Hold each end and use circular motions
- Rinse & moisturise — Apply lotion while skin is damp
How often should I use an African net sponge?
You can use an African net sponge daily with light pressure. For deeper exfoliation, use medium pressure 2-3 times per week.
- Normal skin: Daily light use, deeper 2-3x weekly
- Sensitive skin: Start with 1-2 times per week
- Oily/acne-prone: Daily gentle use on problem areas
Can I use an African net sponge on my face?
We don't recommend it. African net sponges are designed for body use. The texture is too rough for delicate facial skin.
For facial exfoliation, use gentler methods like a soft washcloth, chemical exfoliants, or dedicated facial tools.
Skin Concerns & Conditions
Will an African net sponge help with keratosis pilaris (chicken skin)?
Yes! African net sponges are highly effective for managing keratosis pilaris. The mesh texture removes keratin buildup that causes bumpy patches.
What to expect:
- Week 1-2: Skin feels softer after each shower
- Week 3-4: Visible improvement, bumps less prominent
- Week 5-8: Significant reduction in visible bumps
Is an African net sponge safe for sensitive skin?
Yes, with precautions. You control the intensity through pressure.
- Start with very light pressure
- Use only 1-2 times per week initially
- Pair with fragrance-free body wash
- Always moisturise immediately after
Many customers with sensitive and eczema-prone skin use African net sponges successfully.
Will an African net sponge help with back acne?
Yes! Back acne is often caused by dead skin, oil, and bacteria clogging pores. The African net sponge helps by removing dead skin cells, reaching your entire back, and allowing treatments to penetrate better.
Can an African net sponge help prevent ingrown hairs?
Absolutely! Regular exfoliation removes dead skin that traps hairs and keeps follicles clear.
Exfoliate 24-48 hours before and 48+ hours after shaving or waxing for best results.
Care & Maintenance
How do I clean my African net sponge?
Daily: Rinse thoroughly, squeeze out water, hang to dry.
Weekly: Soak in hot water for 5 minutes, or in equal parts water and vinegar for 15-30 minutes.
Monthly: Machine wash in a mesh bag (no fabric softener) or hand wash. Always hang to dry.
Can I put my African net sponge in the washing machine?
Yes! Place in a mesh laundry bag, use warm water, avoid fabric softener, and hang to dry after. Don't use the dryer.
When should I replace my African net sponge?
Replace if you notice: persistent odour after washing, visible mould, significant holes or tears, or slimy texture when clean.
Normal wear like slight stretching or colour fading doesn't affect performance.
